The Ohio State figure skating club is a program dedicated to camaraderie, recreation, and excellence. The original club came to an end in 1997. A few years later, a Creative Skating class was formed to fulfill the lingering interest of a team of student skaters. Within a few months, this cohesive, performing team of skaters decided to reform the club. Officers were elected in the fall of 1998, largely thanks to Charlie Nicholson, and a core group of skaters became the founding members. The club entered their first collegiate competition at Bowling Green State University winter quarter of that same academic year. Ms. Jessica Dolvin, the instructor of the university's advanced skating classes, helped members to create and instruct the “OSU Precision Skating Team.” The group held weekly practices and performed in shows and exhibitions, but they did not compete. Ms. Dolvin retired in 1999 from coaching the team, but she still remained their coreographer. The seventeen members of the team continued to perform in exhibitions after she left.
The debut of the current Figure Skating Club of the Ohio State University (The OSU FSC) was made in the 2000-2001 academic year. Kristen Thursten is largely credited for rebuilding membership interest. The club continued to coordinate ice time with the OSU figure skating classes and the Columbus Figure Skating Club to best serve club members. Tony Habart, the current club advisor, was a major driving force in the production of the club's First Annual Friends & Family Exhibition in 2001-2002. The club also began to compete at regional collegiate competitions that same academic year.
The Figure Skating Club of the Ohio State University is comprised of dedicated members who practice weekly, participate in annual exhibitions, and attend collegiate competitions. Members can now try-out to be a part of Ohio State's first competitive synchronized skating team as well! All members are invited to participate in club socials, community service events, and fundraisers. We embrace skaters of all ages and levels. The club is continually working towards building a prominent figure skating program at Ohio State.
*Much thanks to Matthew Hornbrook, one of the founding members, for his willingness to share the early history of the club.
